Millennium Chambers is pleased to report a successful outcome in a complex criminal retrial at Nottingham Crown Court, where Miss Jabeen Akhtar, leading Miss Sapna Devi, secured a suspended sentence for TK.
Case Background
The defendant, TK, faced serious allegations linked to a gangland rivalry. The case centred on the possession of firearms, ammunition, and other weapons, alongside allegations that TK’s home was used as a base for the group’s activities.
The prosecution alleged that the group had set out to seek revenge following the murder of a rival gang member. During the attempted attack, a firearm misfired, and the group retreated to TK’s home address. TK was accused of assisting others in leaving the area after the incident.
At the original trial, which lasted 14 weeks, the jury was unable to reach verdicts in TK’s case, leading to a retrial.
Outcome of the Retrial
At the retrial, after careful preparation and advocacy by Miss Akhtar and Miss Devi, the prosecution ultimately accepted a plea to a lesser offence. This resulted in TK receiving a suspended sentence rather than immediate custody.
Skilled Advocacy in Serious Criminal Cases
This result highlights the importance of experienced defence counsel in serious and complex criminal proceedings. The case required a detailed understanding of firearms law, gang-related violence, and the evidential challenges that arise in long-running jury trials.
By achieving a suspended sentence, Miss Akhtar and Miss Devi ensured a proportionate outcome for their client in the context of serious allegations.
