After eight weeks before a High Court Judge at Teesside Crown Court, Michael Magarian KC secured the acquittal of his teenage client of murder and manslaughter.
The prosecution attempted to rely on covert recordings from prison social visits, seeking to introduce this sensitive material as evidence. However, following written submissions from the defence, the Crown ultimately withdrew reliance on this evidence.
In his speech, Michael Magarian KC addressed the dangers of joint enterprise, reminding the jury of its often-misunderstood application. Mere presence at the scene of a crime and being friends with the killer were insufficient to persuade the jury to convict.
Michael Magarian KC was instructed by Eric Watson of Watson Woodhouse Solicitors.
